Being in a hotel may disorient your routine of sleeping. The room itself is not the same, the bed might not be comfortable, and there might not be a lot of space next to the nightstand. To individuals who have to use CPAP to sleep, traveling without the appropriate equipment could be made easy.
A travel CPAP is an ambulatory device, and could be handy among heavy travellers. Selecting a small-size machine is just the first step. It can be a big difference knowing how to install it on the proper setting and having some preparations on leaving home.
Find the Right Spot in the Hotel Room
The bedside tables in Hotel rooms are smaller in size compared to the ones that people have used in their homes. Find a stable surface near a power outlet before unpacking all the items.
It must have a sufficient space around the machine and it must not be positioned in a spot where it can fall. Avoid putting it on the bed, where pillows, blankets or movement could interfere with the equipment.
Unless the power outlet is nearby, make sure that the tubing and power cable do not pose a tripping hazard around the bed.
Check the Room Environment
There can be huge differences in the temperature and humidity of hotel rooms. AC, or heating can be used during the night, and a vent near the bed can make the air stale less comfortable.
Ideally, the CPAP machine should be placed out of direct air vent. This can be used to avoid over dryness or discomfort.
When your machine makes use of humidification, carry the amenities you typically require as opposed to altering the routine entirely once you are on travel.
Pack More Than Just the Machine
The most frequent error during travels is to bring the CPAP machine and forget one of the little things to operate using it.
Make sure you have the machine, power supply, mask, tubing and other things you typically use before you leave. In case your arrangement has a humidifier or another accessory that fits with it, ensure that it is packed as well.
Everything can be kept in a special travel case and it can facilitate packing and unpacking.
During longer travels, it is also handy to carry a spare mask cushion, filter or some other small replacement part. When you are not at home, replacing a missing or damaged part may be a difficult task.
Clean Your Equipment Before and After Travel
Every night you are in touch with your CPAP equipment and your face together with your airflow, therefore cleaning up is essential when travelling.
Wash mask and other parts as per the manufactures suggestions and leave the home. On arriving at the hotel, pack the equipment in a clean and dry place when you are not using it.
Do not keep the mask or tube lying on diversified areas. Hotel rooms are hygienically maintained, but it does not affect that all surfaces will be an absolute position to keep sleep equipment.
Make Setup Part of Your Routine
When you are first using a travel CPAP, you should test it at home/prior to your travel. A smaller machine could be configured with a different layout, accessories or controls than your standard device.
It is better to use it at home to have time to get familiar with the equipment. It further provides an opportunity to realize whether the mask is comfortable or something requires the adjustment.
It comes specifically in handy just before a lengthy business trip or a holiday when familiarizing with new equipment may present a bigger challenge to the initial few nights.
Keep Your Therapy Consistent
A primary benefit of carrying a travel CPAP is having an opportunity to continue with your normal sleep therapy, even when you are out of home.
Attempt to maintain your bedroom habit of usual bedtime as much as you can. Keep the machine in a convenient place, leave the mask and tubing ready before going to bed and do not start setting up until you are already sleepy.
In case of constant discomfort, air leakage or any additional leak therapy issues, you should discuss it with your medical professional or CPAP vendor instead of modifying appropriate settings on your own.
It does not mean you have to leave your CPAP routine in job during a hotel stay. The correct packing patterns, an appropriate location and a minor planning, a travel CPAP can make it far simpler to proceed with your usual rest therapy and to have a holiday outside your house.
